The Mid-East Honors Association offers scholarships and grants to support programs and colleges within the region and their students. Any institution requesting funds must be a member of MEHA for the fiscal year in which funding is requested. All applications will be reviewed by the executive committee. Awards are subject to available funding.
James S. Ruebel Memorial Scholarship
Dr. James S. Ruebel graduated from Finneytown High School in Cincinnati in 1962 and attended Yale University for his undergraduate studies. After completing his master’s and doctorate degrees in classics from the University of Cincinnati, he earned a professorship at the University of Minnesota. In 1978 he joined the Iowa State University faculty, where he worked as an educator and administrator until he became dean of the Ball State University Honors College in 2000, where he served for 17 years.
Dr. Ruebel was a long-standing member of the National Collegiate Honors Council Board and served as President in 2014. In 1994 he received an American Philological Association Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Classics. He published articles on Roman history and was the author of Apuleius: The Metamorphoses, Book 1 (2000) and Caesar and the Crisis of the Roman Aristocracy (1994).
Dr. Ruebel was a lifelong teacher, learner, and mentor to countless students. His legacy of honors and academic rigor will live on through them and their accomplishments.
In honor of Dr. Ruebel’s service and scholarship, the Mid East Honors Association invites students to apply for the annual James S. Ruebel Memorial Scholarship, an award of $1000 to be given to a selected student. Focusing on academic endeavor as well as community engagement, the scholarship committee seeks to foster an Honors student who invests time and talent in his or her campus community.
Student applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Applicant must be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior in an Honors program that is a current (2018-2019 academic year) MEHA member.
- Applicant must be a full time student with a GPA of 3.25 or higher.
- Applicant provides proof of a strong record of service in his or her college/university community.
- Applicant is endorsed by his or her Honors program director/chairperson/dean.
Application materials checklist:
- A 500-word personal statement highlighting university and community service achievements/activities. The first page header should list the student’s university, majors, minors, year in college, name of Honors dean/chair/administrator, and projected graduation date.
- Current curriculum vitae or résumé.
- A copy of an unofficial transcript.
- Letter of recommendation from the applicant’s Honors director/chairperson/dean. This letter should be written on official letterhead, signed, and submitted by the administrator directly to [email protected]

Scholarships for NCHC Sponsored Programs
Partners in the Park, Honors Semesters and Winterim Experiences
MEHA provides student support up to $500 to offset the cost of attending any NCHC-sponsored experiential program (Partners in the Parks, NCHC Semesters, NCHC Winterims, etc.). As does NCHC, we encourage honors administrators and staff to promote these awards and encourage qualified applicants to apply. All recipients of MEHA grants are encouraged to present the results of their projects or experiences at the following MEHA conference.
Application and Requirements
In order to receive funding, students from MEHA member institutions must be accepted into their program of interest. Scholarships will be awarded on a rolling, first-come, first-serve basis. The MEHA Executive Committee will determine individual amounts based on available funding.
The following information must be submitted no later than 3 weeks prior to the project registration deadline (applications received after the deadline will not be considered):
The application includes identifying information, a 500-word essay detailing expectations and goals, the total amount of the tuition and other financial support, and a 150-200-word statement of support from the Honors director or dean acknowledging the funds will be used appropriately.
- Eligible Expenses: Scholarships are for registration fees or tuition only.
- Individual Award Maximum: The maximum scholarship per student per experience is $500.
- Total Number of Scholarships: MEHA offers up to five scholarships each year.
- Institutional Membership Requirement: Students applying for one of these scholarships must be from an Institutional Member of the region in the academic year of the chosen experience.
- Fair Distribution: To ensure scholarship money is spread broadly across the region:
- Up to two students from any one member institution may receive a scholarship in any one calendar year.
- Any one student may receive a scholarship for a particular experience only once.
- Any one student may receive only one scholarship in any one year.
- Basis of Award: Scholarships are awarded competitively based on the application.
- Deadlines: Applications for spring Honors Semesters or Winterim experiences must be submitted by September 15 (prior to the experience). Applications for all Partners in the Parks experiences and fall Honors Semesters must be submitted by March 15 (prior to the experience).
- Submission: All application materials should be submitted to the MEHA executive committee via an online application.
- Decisions of awards for the fall deadline will be sent out by October 1. Decisions of awards for the spring deadline will be sent out by April 1.
- Reflective Essay Requirement: Within one month of completing any of these experiences, the student must submit a 500-word reflective essay; this essay will be posted to the MEHA website. Failure to submit a reflection essay within one month of completion of the experience results in forfeiture of the scholarship.
- Reimbursement: Receiving a timely submission of the reflective essay, the MEHA secretary/treasurer will reimburse the party responsible for paying the registration fee or tuition—either the Honors Program or the student—as noted on the application form.
MEHA Grants are intended to support honors education for member institutions of the Mid-East Honors Association and to assist in the scholarly development of students in honors programs and colleges. Grants of up to $1,000 will be awarded to support innovative projects in honors. These grants will:
• Encourage excellence and provide educational opportunities for honors students in the region
• Fund programs or projects that offer unique honors experiences
• Develop and present regional or state-wide honors seminars on various topics
• Reach as wide an audience of honors-involved members as possible
All recipients of MEHA grants are encouraged to present the results of their projects or experiences at the following MEHA meeting.
Application and Requirements:
The following stipulations are in place for MEHA Grants:
1. Funding is awarded on a cost-benefit basis.
2. No proposals for purchasing equipment or supporting travel will be funded.
3. The proposal should be submitted electronically and must include a written agreement from the director or dean to implement a project that is either fully or partially funded.
4. An evaluation of a funded proposal and an accounting of the funds expended must be sent to the MEHA Secretary-Treasurer within 30 days after project completion.
5. Institutions must participate in MEHA Grants by cost-sharing.
MEHA Grant applications are due by March 1; all projects must have been completed or in process by April 1 of the following year.

MEHA STUDENT LEADER GRANTS
MEHA Student Leader Grants provide up to $500 for students from MEHA institutional members who serve on the NCHC Board of Directors to travel to official meetings of the NCHC Board of Directors during the period between the annual NCHC conference meetings. All recipients of MEHA grants are encouraged to present the results of their projects or experiences at the following MEHA meeting.
To qualify, elected members of the NCHC board must submit the MEHA Student Leader Grant and reimbursement form by email to the MEHA Secretary-Treasurer within 30 days of the first day when costs were incurred. Please contact [email protected] for funding requests.
