Christianity in America from 1650 to 1865

Built on an unstable foundation, religion in America experienced a rocky start. At the founding of the American colonies, Christianity differed in practices that had been well established in England during the 16th Century. According to Jon Butler, in his book “Awash in a Sea of Faith”, Christian practice escalated between 1700 and 1865. As he states clearly in his introduction, church attendance increased despite the popular belief in its decline. However, it is important to note that law does not guarantee real practice. There is a fine distinction between the laws and tradition set by the European church and what exactly changed when Christianity was brought to America. The question Butler asks is “Can we really call America Christian today?”
