Speculative Mathematics & Sacred Geometries: An analysis of intuitive associations in works of art

Mathematics shapes our understanding and permeates our physical environment—patterns emerge and reveal complexities. For more than 5000 years of artistic production, systems of information have been coded into proportions, algorithms, formulas, and underlying relationships; hidden and sacred geometries exist in architectural elements, monumental sculptures, paintings, and site plans. But is an underlying system/application of mathematics the only thing that connects these pieces together? Is there something more intuitive operating here as well—systems or connectors that potentially links discrete pieces together beyond/through the wide expanses of time and space?

Beginning with an analysis of Raphael’s The School of Athens (1509-1511), this speculative research navigates back through ancient civilizations, exploring and proposing potential connections that may have otherwise been overlooked. Does contemporary mathematics provide us the [proper, complete, holistic] tools to ascertain the depth of these connections, or are we just now beginning to glimpse something else? Are there deeper currents concealed in these structures and objects that evade our understanding of mathematics? Is mathematics a marker? Is there more than this?
